Google Your Own Business Name Right Now
Do it. Open your phone, type in your company name, and see what comes up. If the answer is a Facebook page you haven't touched since last year, a few directory listings with the wrong phone number, or nothing at all, that's exactly what a homeowner in your service area sees too.
They don't call you first because they can't find you first. They call the guy who shows up on page one with a real website, clear services, and a phone number that's easy to tap. It doesn't matter if your work is better. If you're not there, you don't exist to that customer.
Fall Is When People Start Searching
September is when homeowners get serious. Furnace tune-ups, roof inspections before the first cold front, gutters before leaf season, foundation and drainage work before winter rain. Whether you're working a crew here in Austin or running routes anywhere else in the country, this is a heavy search month for trades, and search traffic converts into calls fast this time of year.
That traffic goes somewhere. If you don't have a website, it goes to whoever does, even if their work is average and yours is better.
You Don't Need a Full Website to Stop Bleeding Jobs
Here's the part most contractors get wrong. They think a website means months of design work, a photographer, and a few thousand dollars they don't have time to spend right now. It doesn't have to be that.
A minimum viable website, for a trade business, needs about five things:
- Your business name, service area, and phone number, visible without scrolling
- A short list of what you actually do (be specific, not vague)
- A few real photos of your work, even from a phone camera
- A way to request an estimate that doesn't require a phone call
- Basic contact info that matches what's on your Google listing
That's it. That's the whole minimum bar. It's not going to win design awards, but it answers the only question a homeowner is asking in that moment: is this a real business I can trust with my house?
A Google Business Profile Alone Won't Cut It
A lot of shops think having a Google Business Profile is the same as having a web presence. It's a start, but it's not the same thing. Your profile gets someone to look at you. Your website is what convinces them to pick up the phone.
Without a site to click through to, a homeowner sees your profile, sees no link, sees no proof of past work beyond a couple of reviews, and moves to the next name on the list. You put in the effort to get found. Don't lose the job in the last five seconds because there was nowhere to land.
The Real Cost of Staying Invisible
Think about what one missed job is worth to you. Now think about how many people searched for your trade in your area this month and never saw your name at all. That's not a hypothetical loss, it's happening every week you go without a real presence online.
You didn't build a business good enough to earn repeat customers just to lose new ones to a search bar. Fixing this isn't a redesign project. It's putting up the minimum that makes you findable and credible before the fall rush picks up any further.
