Your Review Replies Are Working Whether You Write Them or Not
Every review on your Google profile gets read twice. Once by the person who wrote it, and again by every homeowner deciding whether to call you or the next name on the list. If you leave that five-star review sitting there with no reply, you've wasted free advertising.
Fall is when a lot of trades hit their busiest stretch of the year, whether that's roofers racing the first cold front, HVAC crews doing pre-winter tune-ups, or painters trying to squeeze in exterior jobs before the weather turns. That means more eyes on your profile than usual. A good reply script takes thirty seconds and does more selling than most ads.
The Reply That Turns a Browser Into a Booked Estimate
When someone leaves a glowing review, your reply isn't really for them. It's for the next person scrolling through, trying to decide if you're worth the call.
Try something like this: "Thanks, [Name] — really glad we could get this handled for you. If anyone reading this is dealing with a similar issue, we're usually able to get an estimate out same week. Just give us a call."
That last line matters. You're not just thanking a past customer, you're planting a call-to-action right where a future customer is already reading.
The Reply That Gets a Past Customer to Call You Again
Someone who left you a five-star review already trusts you. That's the easiest repeat business you'll ever get, if you nudge it.
A script that works well: "Appreciate you taking the time to write this, [Name]. If the [gutters, unit, roof, etc.] ever need another look, or if you know someone who could use us, we're one call away."
It's specific to the job you did, it's short, and it opens the door for a referral without sounding like you're begging for one.
What to Say When the Review Isn't So Glowing
Every business gets a rough review eventually. How you respond to it often matters more than the review itself, because future customers are watching how you handle criticism, not just praise.
Keep it calm and specific: "We're sorry to hear the experience didn't meet expectations, [Name]. We'd like the chance to make it right — please call our office directly at [number] so we can sort this out."
Don't argue in the reply. Don't get defensive. A steady, professional response to a bad review can actually build more trust than a pile of perfect ones, because it shows you own your work.
Why This Matters More Than It Seems
Here's the thing nobody tells you: a homeowner reading your reviews right now is doing the exact same thing as someone calling your office. If nobody picks up the phone, they move to the next name on Google. If your reviews sit unanswered, it's the same signal. Both say nobody's home.
You didn't build a crew and a reputation just to lose the job to silence, whether that's a missed call or a missed reply. Responding to reviews with a plan, the same way you'd want your phones answered with a plan, closes that gap.
